There are moments when a recipe comes back to you not because you planned it, but because you need it.

This week has been spent largely in the air: many hours on planes, moving between places, time zones and meetings. Travelling can be enriching and inspiring, but it can also leave you longing for something deeply familiar. Somewhere between airports and arrivals, I feel ready to go home. Not just physically, but emotionally.

With a few precious hours to myself, I find refuge in a cosy café here in Vancouver. Old wooden floors, a sense of calm, the reassuring clink of cups and quiet conversations. It is warm and welcoming in every way. The counter is full of beautiful scones. This being Canada, they come in countless flavours all freshly baked and comforting in their own right.

And yet, what I am longing for most is not there.

What I really want and need is a hug. And a slice of my blood orange, ricotta, polenta and olive oil cake.

While sipping my coffee and watching the world pass by outside the café window, my thoughts drift home — back to my kitchen, to familiar rhythms, to recipes that feel like a warm and much needed hug.

Because comfort isn’t about surprise or novelty. It’s about returning to flavours and rituals that steady you, that remind you who you are and where you belong.
